Decluttering with Kids: Tackling the Impossible with these Easy Tips

Oh boy, let me tell you, trying to declutter with kids is like trying to stay dry in a hurricane - it's just not gonna happen! But, we had a major victory this past weekend. We were able to say goodbye to some of our kids' cluttered toys and props that were collecting dust and taking up valuable space in our NYC sized apartment.

Now, how did we manage to pull off this miracle? Well, I told my little hoarders that we could take pictures and videos of their precious creations so they could keep a digital record of their memories. And let me tell you, that did the trick!

This same method worked well for saying goodbye to all the precious artwork and stories our little ones create. If they still insist on keeping some of them or have some unfinished pieces they swear they will come back to before they leave for college, I found a solution. Using these folders and magazine holders, we were able to reclaim all our work spaces and gather everything together into one spot.

Repurposing takeout containers

With their creations out of the way, we then tackled the sprawling collection of school prizes, birthday gift bag goodies, and those darn Happy Meal toys. I repurposed some takeout containers to organize what I couldn't make "mysteriously disappear." They're stackable, clear, and easy enough for my pre-schooler to handle. These same containers work wonders too for keeping tiny Lego pieces off the floor and preventing your living room from becoming a minefield.

But, let's not forget about the bigger toys, like blocks and train tracks. We love these stackable clear storage bins that make organizing a breeze. They're even easy enough for my toddler to carry and open, and then throw everything back in when they're done playing. When you've managed to get your toddler to do that, let us know how you did it, and tell us why you're lying. Just kidding... but seriously.

Keep it light

Decluttering can be anxiety inducing for all parties involved. But, with these tricks you can hopefully have a tear-free experience for both you and the kids!

Take it one small project at a time. Trust me, it's better for your sanity and it'll prevent your little ones from having a complete meltdown when they walk into their room and it looks unrecognizable. The last thing you need is a raging toddler who's allergic to change making an even bigger mess.

For older kids, you can turn it into a game! Set a timer and challenge your family to see who can declutter their designated space first in a certain amount of time. Or, make a list of things you want to toss and see who can find them all first. It's like a scavenger hunt, but instead of treasure, you get a cleaner house!
