So, you read my last post and now you’re ready to transform from couch potato to marathon finisher. Congrats! Before I unleash my running gear recommendations, remember: if you're just starting out, keep it simple. Any pair of trainers and comfy workout clothes will do. Once running becomes your weekly jam, then let's talk about upgrading.

Running Shoes: The Foundation of Your Journey

Let’s start with the basics: shoes. If you're serious about running, your feet deserve the best. Check out Runner's World for comprehensive shoe reviews tailored to various runner types. As a road runner with a midfoot strike, I look for lightweight, neutral shoes with a modest heel-to-toe drop and enough cushioning to go easy on my aging joints. My go-to brands? Brooks Ghost and New Balance. They’re affordable and reliable for newbies and seasoned runners alike.

For a personalized fit, head to a running store like Fleet Feet for a gait analysis. Whether you overpronate (roll in, shoes wear out along the inside), are neutral, or supinate (outside wear), proper footwear will help compensate for flat feet or high arches, but check out the exercises which are designed to develop a healthy stride. We're all about minimizing injuries!

Dressing to Go the Distance: Apparel for Any Weather

🏃🏻‍♀️ Socks

Avoid 100% cotton socks like the plague. Cotton equals blisters. Opt for performance socks made with merino wool and synthetics. Budget-friendly options work for shorter runs, but as distances increase, invest in quality brands like Feetures and Smartwool. Your blister-free feet will thank you.

🏃🏻‍♀️ Sports Bras

A well-fitting sports bra is a non-negotiable. The last thing you want is unnecessary jostling or chafing. If your bras start to chafe, it’s past time for an upgrade. Comfortable support is key for happy miles.

🏃🏻‍♀️ Storage

For essentials like keys and phones, you need something secure. My favorite is the FlipBelt – it doesn’t bounce or chafe and holds everything you need, even for a full 26.2 mile marathon.

Hydration and Fuel: Keep Going Strong

🏃🏻‍♀️ Hydration

For runs longer than 3-6 miles, hydration is crucial, especially in summer. FlipBelt’s water bottle fits perfectly in the belt, but I also love Amphipod’s ergonomic handheld bottles. Don’t forget to add some sugar-free electrolytes like LyteShow or Hi-Lyte for that extra hydrating boost.

🏃🏻‍♀️ Fuel

For runs over an hour, bring fuel to replenish energy every 45 minutes. I’ve tried gels, gummies, jelly beans, and even Honey Stinger waffles. Find what works for you during long training runs, but always know where the nearest bathroom is if you’re testing new fuels. Personally, I favor gels for longer runs because after a certain number of miles, even chewing becomes too much extra effort.

Sun Protection: Shield Yourself Year-Round

Sunblock and sunglasses are must-haves. Goodr sunglasses are tried and true – they don’t slip or bounce, even during intense workouts. Protect your skin and eyes, no matter the season.

Seasonal Gear: Dressing for Temperature Changes

Next up, let's talk about what you wear in any weather. No one knows better than you if you generally run hot or cold, so there will be variability. I prefer to be cooler during my runs, and the suggestions below are what work for me.

☀️ 60-80+ Degrees

  • Sports bra
  • Moisture-wicking tank or short sleeve tee
  • Running shorts
  • Ankle or no-show socks
  • Sun protection
  • Body Glide (trust me, chafing is no joke, especially during the sweaty season)

❄️ 20 Degrees and Below

But let's be honest, when it’s freezing enough for neck warmers and ear wraps, you’ll find me on a treadmill binging Netflix while I train. Same goes for 80+ degrees or rain. A girl's gotta have limits, right?

Remember, it’s all about finding what works for you. As my husband–a 40 time half-marathon finisher–wisely says, train with the gear and fuel you’ll use on race day. Stick to this advice, and your race day will be as smooth as your training runs. Now, go forth and conquer those miles!
